Get a peek into Tipu's dreams at Chowdiah

Last Updated 11 July 2017, 19:33 IST
What dreams troubled Tipu Sultan in his sleep? What did these dreams reveal about the man known as the ‘Tiger of Mysore’?

Delve into his life and find answers this Friday as Kathputliyaan Theatre Group presents the play ‘Tipu Sultan ke Khwaab’, directed by veteran theatre person Zafer Mohiuddin.

The play is based on playwright Girish Karnad’s 1997 work ‘Tippuvina Kanasugalu’, commissioned by BBC Radio to commemorate India’s 50th year of independence. It reconstructs the life of Tipu and his dreams, which he used to record along with their interpretations in a journal.

Mohiuddin was inspired when he first read Karnad’s work and has even translated it into Urdu and Hindi to make it accessible to more people.

“Karnad’s play is based on historical evidence and I learned so much about Tipu Sultan that I had not known before. Today, there is so much controversy around the ruler with certain sections and political parties saying things not based on historical facts. The younger generation should know about Tipu and what a visionary he was,” Mohiuddin said.

The play is being staged in Hindustani, a combination of Hindi and Urdu, for the first time. Workshops were conducted for the artistes to become familiar with the language.

“I chose to write it in Hindustani so that more people would be able to understand the play and learn about Tipu. He was a visionary and under him, sericulture and small-scale industries like Channapatna toys received a push,” the director said. Mohiuddin has been working on this project for over six months now.

“More than 65 people auditioned for the play, from Hindi, Kannada and English theatre. I narrowed down to about 30 people and have been training them for many months,” he said.

Dakhini flavour

In addition to Hindustani, some scenes also feature Tipu speaking to his family members in Dakhini.
“There are different dialects of Dakhini such as Hyderabad Dakhini but the one used in the play is Kolar Dakhini which is what Tipu spoke since he was born in Devanahalli,” the director said.

The play is scheduled for July 13 and 14 at 7 pm at Chowdiah Memorial Hall, Malleswaram. Entry is free and passes will be available at the venue an hour before the start of the show.
