Rs 3.11 cr in banned currency seized, 6 held

The City Crime Branch police raided a hotel and seized Rs 3.11 crore in devalued currency notes here on Monday evening. They also arrested six people.

The police team raided Rohan Residency, a hotel, and seized the demonetised currency, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Seema Latkar in a press conference.

Latkar said that acting on a tip-off, the CCB team led by Inspector B R Gaddekar raided room number 204 in the hotel.

Around 80% of the notes seized are in the Rs 500 denomination, while the rest are in the Rs 1,000 denomination. The arrested have been identified as Arvind Pundalik Talavar (33) of Goa, Suhas Ashok Patil (31) of Pune, Rama Bhairu Patil (29) of Halga-Bastwad in Belagavi, Saddam Husain Shaikh (28) of Miraj, Anil Jayantilal Patel (29) of Gujarat and Abudl Nasir Mohammad Basha (52) of Bhatkal.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Anil Patel, the prime suspect, claims to be running a furniture shop.
