Vishesh Bhriguvanshi, the former national team captain, became the first Indian to be signed by the National Basketball League in Australia on Friday.

Vishesh has agreed to a one-year training deal with Adelaide 36ers.

Delighted with the development, one of the most accomplished shooting guards in Asia, Vishesh confessed that it was his long cherished dream to play in such a league. “It feels really good to be the first Indian to get signed by a team in NBL. This is just the beginning and I am really excited to play in one of the big leagues and make a name for myself,” he told DH.

The contract though states that Vishesh will only be eligible to play for the team if a 36ers players gets injured.

The 25-year-old has been training at the Adelaide-based Dream Basketball Academy that played a crucial role in his selection for the club.

Vishesh is hoping to improve his game by playing alongside the well established players. “I will be training with Dream Basketball Academy as well and I am sure I will improve certain areas of my game during my one-year stint with the team,” he said.

Vishesh’s tryst with 36ers started when he, alongwith Amritpal Singh, Yadwinder Singh and Amjyot Singh Gill, was invited for tryouts in NBL Draft combine for the 2017-18 season in April.

With his exact date of departure to Adelaide yet to be confirmed, Vishesh is focusing on getting himself fit and ready for the upcoming FIBA Asia Cup in Lebanon in August.

“My immediate focus is on representing my country in the FIBA Asia Cup. I am looking forward to playing there,” he said.
