BJP trying to disturb peace, charges chief minister

Last Updated 07 July 2017, 18:42 IST
Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said that the BJP should stop daydreaming about coming to power in the state.

“Karnataka is not like Uttar Pradesh where the agenda of Hindutva can fetch votes,” he said at a convention of Congress leaders at Adyar on Friday.

The chief minister said, “The Congress leaders should go to people with confidence telling about the achievements of the state government. We have stood up to the expectations of people and have fulfilled our promises.

“The achievement of BJP during its tenure in the state is only scams and controversies. This was the reason why the BJP faced a humiliating defeat in Gundlupet and Nanjangud byelections.”

Siddaramaiah said Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been fooling people with attractive slogans. None of the assurances made by the BJP prior to elections have been implemented, he criticised.

He said the BJP has nothing to criticise about the state government after the waiver of agricultural loans. Therefore, it is creating communal tensions to destroy the peace and order, he charged.

Siddaramaiah said that he has told the police to initiate strict action against those who spread communalism, kill innocent people and cause communal tensions. The BJP has always been trying to gain political mileage by dividing people on the basis of caste and religion while the Congress stands for equality and secularism, he claimed.

He expressed confidence that the Congress will win in all eight Legislative Assembly constituencies in Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Kodagu.

All India Congress Committee general secretary K C Venugopal, who is also in-charge of the party’s affairs in the state, said that people of Dakshina Kannada are peace lovers. But the communal forces are trying to destroy the secular fabric of the district, he said.

Venugopal challenged the BJP leaders to take part in an open debate with Congress to compare the administration of Siddaramaiah in the state and the Modi-led NDA government at the Centre. The state government has fulfilled 95% of the promises made in the election manifesto. Congress believes in work and not in speeches, he said and criticised BJP state president B S Yeddyurappa for his visit to Dalits’ houses and called it a gimmick.

He said that though the GST bill was initially proposed by the earlier UPA government, the current NDA government has implemented the laws of taxation badly. Venugopal called upon the party leaders and workers to work restlessly to bring Congress to power in the state once again.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president G Parameshwara said that the aim of the Congress is to make a BJP-free Karnataka in the next election.

He lambasted MP Shobha Karandlaje for her disrespectful remark on AICC vice president Rahul Gandhi.
AICC secretary Vishnunathan, KPCC working presidents Dinesh Gundu  Rao and S R Patil, MP M Veerappa Moily, Energy Minister D K Shivakumar, Food and Civil Supplies Minister U T Khader, District In-charge Minister B Ramanath Rai, MLAs K Abhayachandra Jain, J R Lobo, B A Mohiuddin Bava, Mayor Kavitha Sanil, District Congress Committee president Harish Kumar and others were present on the occasion.
