Whitefield's senior citizens team up, discover their hidden talent

Last Updated 05 July 2017, 18:55 IST
A group of senior citizens aged between 60 and 85 years has formed a group called ‘Harmony’ in Whitefield to involve themselves in recreational activities.

When Rajive Bajpai (61), a Bollywood music enthusiast and a resident of Palm Meadows apartment in Whitefield arranged a get-together in his house in December last year, little did he know about the zest and energy of senior citizens who sang and danced merrily. In order to bring out the hidden talent, he formed a group of senior citizens who could knit a family of their own through cultural activities.

“That night was an eye-opener for me. It was amazing to see the incredible talent which these people had. Some of them were singing and dancing in front of an audience for the first time in their lives. Retirement or old age is not the nearing of an end. It is a new beginning,” he said.

A former corporate trainer, Lalitha Vishwanathan, said, “I have never performed on stage before in my life. The group and the get-together held on that day at Rajive’s place has brought out a singer in me.”

Under the group Harmony, senior citizens are involved in various programmes such as singing, dancing, photography, group movie watching, talk shows, stage craft, anchoring, playing musical instruments and much more. Aimed at building a family of their own, eliminating stage fear and showcasing the zeal of an elder person even at their ripe old age, this community is helping the senior citizens live a full life.

With already 90 members, the group is all set to explore a plethora of creative activities by senior citizens.
