JOIN USThe Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed the Karnataka Public Safety (Measures) Enforcement Bill, 2017, which makes it mandatory for owners of various establishments in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike and other city corporations limits to instal CCTV cameras on their premises.
Piloting the bill on behalf of Home Minister G Parameshwara, Law Minister T B Jayachandra said the bill makes it mandatory for owners of the establishments to make available video footage from the CCTV cameras, if sought by the police for investigation.
The House also passed a bill that provides for collecting a cess at the time of vehicle registration to be utilised for road safety purposes.
Piloting the Karnataka Road Safety Authority Bill, 2017, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said the state witnessed 44,000 accidents resulting in 11,133 deaths last year. The provisions of the bill provide for putting in place road safety measures with the aim of brininging down the number of accidents.
The bill also provides for constitution of a Karnataka State Road Safety Authority headed by the chief secretary. The authority would formulate road safety programmes, implement projects, programmes and schemes related to road safety.
Vishvesvara Hedge Kageri (BJP) said unauthorised road humps had become a menace in the state and the government should take steps to remove them. Besides, the Legislative Council passed three bills unanimously by voice votes.
The bills include Karnataka State Civil Services (Regulation of Transfer of Medical Officers and Other Staff) (Amendment) Bill, 2017; Karnataka State Higher Education Council (Amendment) Bill, 2017; and Karnataka Compulsory Service Training By Candidates Completed Medical Courses (Amendment) Bill, 2017. These bills were passed in the Assembly on Tuesday.
