Civic workers threaten strike on June 30

The Karnataka Pourakarmikara Mahasangha has threatened to intensify its agitation on June 30 after the proposed meeting at the Vidhana Soudha on regularisation of pourakarmikas (civic workers) and transfer of salaries directly into their accounts could not take place on Tuesday.

The government had bought time from the pourakarmikas when more than 6,000 of them went on an indefinite strike a week ago. As garbage piled up at different places, the government sent Minister for Social Welfare H Anjaneya and Minister of State for Municipalities and Local Bodies Eshwar Khandre for negotiations.

The ministers had said that a decision in favour of pourakarmikas would be taken at a meeting on June 20. “The meeting has been postponed without giving new date. We have been told that it would be convened some time this week,” said Narayan, president of Karnataka Pourakarmikara Mahasangha.
He said pourakarmikas would go on strike if no decision is taken before June 30.
