The state government is preparing Geographical Information System maps of all government and aided schools in the state, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Tanvir Sait said on Friday.

Around 76,000 schools, including aided ones, will be covered under the GIS project, which will be linked to Google Maps. The department has asked all the schools to upload photographs of classrooms, laboratories and other facilities on the student-tracking system website. This will help the government monitor the available infrastructure at these schools, he told reporters.

The government is finding it difficult to track the utilisation of funds. Hence, the schools have been asked to upload photographs of works implemented by them, he added. The department is also planning to introduce biometric attendance system for teachers using the student-tracking system.

He said the department is planning to recall a portion of the newly printed textbooks because of printing errors. He,  said it is not a big problem as only a few textbooks have errors.

Earlier in the Legislative Council, JD(S) MLC Basavaraj Horatti sought to move a private bill — Karnataka Education (Amendment) Bill, 2016 —  seeking to fix minimum salary for lecturers working under the contract system in private pre-university colleges.

But Sait convinced Horatti to withdraw the Bill, saying that the legislature had in its last session passed an amendment Bill for this purpose. He also assured him that the government is open to incorporate it if the member has any other suggestions in this regard.
