Realtor's car that mowed down boy had fake reg number

Last Updated 06 June 2017, 20:41 IST

A 50-year-old real estate businessman has been arrested for using a fake registration number for his car that mowed down a 12-year-old boy in Babusapalya, east Bengaluru, on May 27.

Ramesh alias Lancer Ramesh, a resident of MM Garden in Babusapalya, had given his Maruti Zen to
his son, Shreyas, who lent it to a friend named Suresh. Neither Shreyas nor Suresh has a driving licence. Driving on Babusapalya service road near Ganesha temple, Suresh hit a two-wheeler and knocked down two pedestrians, including a boy named Boran who died later.

Suresh abandoned the car and ran away, a police officer said.

Eyewitness account
Based on an eyewitness account, police arrested Suresh the same evening from the KR Puram railway station.
He told them the car belongs to Shreyas.

Police eventually confronted Ramesh and booked him for giving the vehicle to people who have no driving licence.
The case took a curious turn when enquiries with the Regional Transport Office (RTO) and the Traffic Management Centre (TMC) showed that the registration number — KA 03/MD 4457 — had been allotted to a Hyundai Santro, not a Maruti Zen. Police sent the engine and chassis number of Ramesh’s car to the RTO for verification and it emerged that the vehicle was not registered at all.

Ramesh was then booked for using a fake registration number, and an additional FIR was registered against him at the Hennur police station.
