Sea erosion hits Ullal

Last Updated 06 June 2017, 19:02 IST

A house was partially washed away and ten houses are facing the threat of getting washed away due to sea erosion at Ullal. This has increased the concerns of poor families residing on the shore.

The residents said the threat of further sea erosion still persists in the area. The house of Khairunnisa, a resident, has been partially damaged. She has shifted the things from her house to a neighour’s house.

Though the authorities had taken measures to dump boulders as a temporary relief at Kaiko region in the morning, the house was partially damaged in the afternoon.

The phenomenon of sea erosion repeats every year and several measures have been taken to prevent it. However, there is no respite for the residents in several areas in Ullal from sea erosion yet.

The residents accused local MLA and Minister for Food and Civil Supplies U T Khader of failing to respond to their woes. “We have been complaining about rough waves in the region for the last one week. Though the minister visited us and promised to convene a meeting, no meeting was held to discuss the issue. The deputy commissioner visited the spot on June 4. We made an appeal to take measures to dump boulders behind the house of Khairunnisa to save the house from getting washed away,”

U T Khaleel, a resident, said.

Ullal CMC Commissioner Vani Alva said about 10 to 15 houses in Kaiko and Kileriyanagara are facing the threat from sea erosion. The CMC will extend all cooperation to the residents. With the help of locals, a woman, whose house was damaged, has been shifted. The CMC will write to the tahsildar seeking additional compensation to the victims, Vani said.

CMC president Hussain Kunhi Monu, members Mohammed Mukkachery, Mahalakshmi, and revenue officials visited the spot.

They have directed the inmates of those houses that are facing threat from sea erosion to shift to safer areas.
