The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) today rescued six fishermen from the deep sea off Paradip coast in Odisha, official sources said.

Coast Guard ship Rajkiran while patrolling in the deep sea sighted a partially sunken country boat off the Paradip coast. At least six fishermen were clinging onto the half-sunken boat and waving hands for rescue, an ICG official said.

The ship approached the sunken boat and carried out necessary manoeuvring and rescued all survivors without losing much time amidst rough weather conditions, the official said.

"All survivors were safely taken on board using lifebuoy and jumping ladder. Essential first aid medicines and refreshment were provided immediately and all survivors were found in good physical condition," the official said.

However, the survivors told the ICG officials that one of their colleagues identified as Rama Rao (45) was washed away by a strong wave at about 5 in the morning, he said.

Though Rajkiran carried out search in the area, it could not find any body.

After the operation, the ship entered Paradip port and handed over the rescued fishermen to the officials of the Fisheries department in presence of marine police, he said.
