Mercedes strengthens E-Class range in India with new E 220 d

German luxury car maker Mercedes-Benz on Friday added yet another luxury sedan to its E-Class portfolio in India, when it drove in the first long wheelbase right-hand drive E-Class 220 d.

Subsequent to the success of the long wheelbase E 350 d diesel and E 200 petrol variants, the E 220 d also marks the introduction of Mercedes-Benz’s revolutionary OM 654 diesel engine in the Indian market. The new E 220 d, powered by a four-cylinder diesel engine, will be manufactured at the company’s facility at Chakan, near Pune.

The Mercedes-Benz E 220 d is priced at Rs 57.14 lakh (ex-showroom Pune), with the company passing on additional GST benefits to customers. The car is also carrying a low cost of ownership starting at Rs 76,600. Addressing reporters at the E 220 d’s launch, Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Roland Folger said, “With an unparalleled luxury quotient, best in class passenger comfort, highly agile driving dynamics and the lowest total cost of ownership; we’ve launched another winning product with the new E 220 d.”

 The E 220 d’s 1950 cc diesel engine churns out 194 hp @ 3800 rpm of power, with a torque of 400 Nm @ 1600-2800 rpm. The car, with a 9-speed AT, claims an impressive acceleration of 0-100 kmph in 7.8 seconds, with a top speed of 240 kmph.  The car’s exterior boasts of a panoramic sunroof and 17-inch light alloy wheels, among other features, while the interiors comprise 64 colours and five dimming levels of ambient lighting.
