Work near Melkote temple invites public wrath

The Archaeology department’s move to construct a compound around the shrine of Sri Cheluvanarayanaswamy in Melkote has invited public wrath.

“Thousands of devotees visit the temple and the compound under construction has become an eyesore. The Archaeology department is unnecessarily constructing a compound very close to the temple, which is against the norms, instead of taking steps to prevent the seepage of rainwater into the temple. The foundation is being laid after digging 5-foot deep pits around the temple, turning the place messy with rain playing spoilsport. A portion of the Jeeyar temple, is also covered with mud,” said residents.

Speaking to DH, Sampathmaran and Shashikumar of the town alleged that the Archaeology department, which is “harassing” the residents near the temple by not allowing construction or repair of houses, is violating the norms. “If the deputy commissioner and MP C S Puttaraju do not visit the spot and stall the works, it will become inevitable to stage a protest,” they warned.
