Mega yoga session planned for International Yoga Day

To promote the heritage city at international level, the authorities are planning to organise a mega yoga session on the occasion of International Yoga Day on June 21. The authorities are aiming to create a record by roping in 50,000 people for the event at one place.

Mysuru city, also known as country’s yoga capital, has more than 200 yoga centres. A large number of people, including foreigners visit Mysuru to learn yoga. It may be mentioned that the city celebrates International Yoga Day every year, by organising a demonstration of mass suryanamaskar, where thousands participate and perform different asanas.

This year, the event is being organised in association with Tourism, Ayush departments, Nehru Yuva Kendra,  Yoga and Nature Cure Hospital and others.

As usual, a mass yoga session will be organised in front of Mysuru Palace, where 10,000 people can be accommodated. The arrangements for the other participants will be made in the vicinity of the Palace - in front of Kote Anjaneya Swami temple, Rajpath and on D Devaraj Urs Road. Traffic will be blocked from 6 am to 8 am on the day. Deputy Commissioner (DC) D Randeep held a meeting with the authorities concerned and yoga trainers in this regard recently.

The DC requested private and government school and college students, National Service Scheme volunteers, NCC cadets  and government employees to attend the event in large numbers and make it a success.

The participants are requested to be attired in white clothes during the event and carpet arrangements are being made by the organisers. The district administration has also planned to organise a training session for the interested a week before the ‘Yoga Day’, the DC said.

While many yoga institutions are planning to organise yoga sessions to mark the day, they are already gearing up to impart free yogasana classes for the interested participants.

Rural Development and Self Employment Training Institute (RUDSETI) will organise a month-long training programme at it’s premises in Hinkal, near the city, from May 22 to June 21.

Every day the classes will be held in two schedules—5.30 am to 7 am and 5 pm to 6.30 pm. The professional yoga teachers from Sri Dharmasthala Yoga and Nature Cure Hospital, will conduct the classes. Interested may contact: 94498 60466.
