Relief for Goa beach shack owners

Last Updated 22 May 2017, 19:33 IST

Ahead of the monsoon season, the environment ministry has allowed shacks on the beaches of Goa  to stay put, changing an old rule that necessitates dismantling of these structures by end of May.

Earlier this month, the environment ministry amended the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notification to permit the beach shacks to retain their structures.

The rider is that they would not operate between June and August.“Each year I spent nearly
Rs 1.5 lakh to dismantle and again putting up my shack. The decision would help us to retain the kitchen at the high ground and keep my staff. The only concern for me is now the security of the materials,” Cruz Cardazo, president of shack owners welfare society in Goa, told DH.

There are currently 360 shacks that has received licences to operate between 2016-2019.
Each shack generates a turnover of Rs 40-50 lakh approximately every year. In addition, there are shacks that are set up on private property.
