The second round of the lottery process for allotment of seats in private schools under the Right to Education Act was initiated on Monday.

A total of 1,10,625 applicants are taking part in the lottery and the number of seats available in this round is 40,990.

Initiating the process, Commissioner of Public Instruction Sowjanya said that 5,000 new applications were received in the state for the second round. Applicants who did not get a seat in the first round were allowed to change their preference of schools in their ward.

“This was done so that the applicant would have a chance of getting a seat in the second round. In many cases, schools which they had selected did not have vacant seats after round one but other schools in their ward had unallotted seats,” she explained.

The first round of lottery was held on April 28 and 96,908 seats were allotted in it. Of  these, 86,854 applicants confirmed their admission.

“Of the balance 10,054 seats, 788 seats have not been carried forward to the second round due to cases in the high court, schools closing down and other issues,” Sowjanya said. After processing, parents will receive SMS regarding the status of their application on Tuesday.

She said that the issue of shortage of papers for printing this year’s textbooks was resolved and 80% of the printing has already been completed. She said that all arrangements had been made for students in government schools to get their free textbooks, uniforms, shoes and socks and bicycles, when the academic year begins on May 29.

The last date for admission of children who are allotted seats in the second round is May 31.
