Late start shouldn't be a concern: Race Director Jones

As the city gears up to host the 10th edition of the TCS World 10K on Sunday, the organisers, Procam International, unveiled the route for the road race on Wednesday.

Like in the previous edition, the race will begin at the Sree Kanteerava stadium and head towards the M Chinnaswamy stadium via Kasturba road. The runners will continue on MG Road, pass the Deccan Herald office, before turning left at Manipal centre towards Cubbon Road.

Continuing on Cubbon road, the runners will head straight towards Chinnaswamy stadium, taking a small U-turn at Kamaraj Road to ensure that the race meets the required distance. At Chinaswammy, the runners will cover the length of Queen’s Road before heading towards the Karnataka High Court. At the High Court, the pack will move towards Cubbon Park and then to the Kanteerava to complete their race.

“It’s the same route that we followed last year. But this time around, the course looks really good,” said race director Hugh Jones.

“Until a few years ago we have the metro rail construction work going around the course. Last year, though there was no construction activity, the roads were not in top shape. But this year, I am really impressed by the course. The local authorities here have done a wonderful job to get a top course in place,” he stated.

A change in the timing of the elite race for men would mean getting a better time than last year could be a difficult task but Jones thought otherwise.

“Yes, it (starting the elite field late into the day) was a concern. But we believe with a course as good as we have here, it shouldn’t be that big a problem. These (elite) guys train throughout the year in testing conditions and are conditioned to run at any given time.

If there’s any problem with the sun being out during the (elite) race, I think that will be countered by the fast course we have in place,” he explained.

Like in previous years, there will be proper medical facilities along the way and also at the stadium, the organisers said.
