Mild tremors damage walls, create panic in Mandya village

Residents of Goravanahalli near Maddur town in Mandya district reportedly experienced mild tremors for a few seconds on Monday, raising fears of an impending earthquake.

Residents experienced the tremors and heard a loud noise around 4 pm which caused cracks on the walls of a few houses. They ran out of their homes in panic, Surendra, a resident, told DH. When they returned to their homes after a while, they were stunned to find cracks on the walls. Surendra said it was the first time that they village had experienced anything of this sort.

Nagabushan, senior scientist in the Department of Mines and Geology, however, said the Richter Scale at the Seismic Observation Centre near KRS hadn’t recorded any tremors. The department’s staff visited the village for a spot inspection and to instil confidence in people. The cause of the tremors will be ascertained soon, he added.

Maddur Tahsildar S Harsha, Shirestedar Lakshminarasaiah and Village Accountant Thimmegowda visited Goravanahalli.
