Dakshina Kannada has improved its position in the SSLC examination this year by scaling to the second position with a pass percentage of 82.39 from the third position last year.

Efforts put in to improve performance on slow learners in the district have yielded results. The district was in the 26th position in the state in 2013 and seventh in 2012. In 2013-14, the pass percentage had increased to 79.15 while the position had slipped to 29.

With a pass percentage of 73.9, Dakshina Kannada had stood third in 2005. In 2006, the district stood in the 11th position when its pass percentage slipped to 72.87. In 2007, it stood fifth with 82.09%, sixth in 2008 (76.6%), fourth in 2009 (82.02%), eighth in 2010 (72.75%). Though the percentage had increased in 2011, the position had slipped to 21 in 2011 and the position had increased to seventh in 2012.

G S Shashidhar, Block Education Officer (BEO) of Puttur, had brought together a team of teachers and subject experts to launch an initiative ‘Mission 95 Plus,’ an initiative to improve performance of students, especially the slow learners. The mission involved conducting special classes for slow learners and monitoring their preparation as well as conducting night classes where the students stayed back in schools at night in February and March months. Teachers from private and aided schools and elected representatives were involved in the exercise.

‘It’s all hard work’

DDPI Walter D’Mellow told DH that the district could returned to its glory due to the hard work of the teachers and students. Teachers have worked hard for improving the results since the beginning of the academic year. In addition, the elected representatives, under the leadership of zilla panchayat standing committee on education Shahul Hameed, conducted several motivational camps, especially for children from minority communities. The camps in all the taluks motivated the children to excel in the examination, he added.

“To improve the results, special classes were conducted in schools for the students who were weak in studies. Night class programmes were conducted for slow learners as part of ‘Mission 95 Plus’ in Puttur. Under this programme, the teachers had focused on those students who had scored between 0 and 35 marks in the mid-term exams. A programme called ‘Vidyarthi Mane Mana Bheti’ was launched to instil confidence and also encourage them to work hard to do well in the exam. Under the programme, a team of two teachers visited the houses either in the morning or evening to instil confidence among students. Joint efforts put in by teachers, school managements and our block education officers have paid off,” he explained.
