Udupi tops state in SSLC results

The district has topped the state in SSLC examination with 84.23% results. Udupi was deprived of excellence last year.

It had topped the state in 2009, 2012 and 2015. This time, however, the results have declined by 5.29% when compared to previous years. In 2016, the district’s overall pass percentage was 89.52%.

As many as 14,315 students appeared for SSLC examinations this year while 14,880 students had written the exam last year. This number does not include the repeaters and private students.

In 2007, the district was in second place while in 2008, it was placed third; in 2009, the district had topped the state; in 2010, it was in fourth position; in 2011, it was ranked sixth and in 2012, the district was in the top position. In 2013, it was in third place and in 2014, it stood 16th in the state. In 2015, the district excelled and in 2016, the district was in second position.

The overall pass percentage across the state has witnessed a decline of 8% and this has affected the districts’ pass percentage.  DDPI Diwaker Shetty told DH that the continuous efforts to ensure that the schools in the district have rigorous and disciplined study schedule has resulted in this success.

Shetty said they were expecting 92% results. A well-planned schedule was put forth and the teachers took two hours’ extra classes for the students. The students were guided how to face the examination and also were given extra training in difficult subjects. The teachers were also trained.

The meetings of headmasters and headmistresses were held regularly every month. In turn, they conducted meetings with teachers and told them to chalk out a well-planned training programme for the students. BEOs were also directed to be part of the special teaching process in schools, especially during the parents’ meetings which were held frequently.

He said their hard work has yielded better results. However, the district failed to get the expected percentage, he said.  In 2016, the district had received 89.52% results. In 2015, the district scored 93.37% and in 2014, the pass percentage was 85.36 %. In 2013, the district had recorded 87.68% results. The district had topped the state in 2012 and Chikkodi took over the position and again in 2015, the district topped the state and this year, the district is first in state. The last year’s topper Bengaluru Rural has been pushed into the 10th position.

Top scorers

Saraswati Vidyalaya in Gangolli and Government High School in Gundmi have secured 100% results.
The toppers in the district are Manjesh Sherigar (622 marks) of Government PU College, Baindoor; Rakshitha (622) of Government PU College, Uppunda; Shreya Shetty (620) of Venkataramana English Medium High School in Kundapura; Pallavi Prabhu (620) of Anantheshwara English Medium school, Udupi; Ananath Nayak (618) of Government  Composite High School, Olakadu, Udupi; Kishen Nayak (618) of Government Composite High School, Olakadu, Udupi and Shashank (617) of Government PU College, Bidkalakatte respectively.
