Srujana N, from Expert PU College, Mangaluru, was pleasantly surprised on Thursday evening when she learnt that she had topped the Science stream, along with another student with 596 marks out of 600.

“I was so surprised to know that I came first! Even my parents were not expecting it. At last my hard work has paid off,” she said.

Srujana scored a perfect 100 in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Computer Science, 99 in Hindi and 97 in English. She has not decided the course of her future yet, confused between engineering and pure science degree.

“My mother is a lecturer so I will take her guidance to decide what to choose. But whatever I pick, I want to study in the top college for that subject,” Srujana said.

Coming from a rural background did not hold back Radhika Pai, a student of Sarswati Vidyalaya PU College, Gangolli, Kundapura in Udupi district, who also topped the science stream.  “There is no need for sophisticated colleges for one to succeed. It all depends on how you pursue your goals,” Radhika said, speaking to DH in Mangaluru.

Without any extra coaching, she scored 100 marks each in Physics, Chemistry, Maths and Biology and 98 each in English and Sanskrit. Radhika, the only child of businessman Madhav Pai and Maya Pai, wanted to be an engineer since her childhood.

B Chaitra worked hard towards her ambition to be the topper in her college,  Indu College in Kottur, Ballari district, but she exceeded her own expectations by securing first rank in the Arts stream in the state with 589 marks. Her parents — Banakar Kotresh and Kavitha — live off a field they have taken on contract in Gangammanahalli, where they reside. Chaitra worked keenly in the classroom and even on the field, under the sun, helping her parents in farming.

She scored well in her chosen subjects Optional Kannada, Political Science, History and Education. Her college management has decided to fully bear the expenses of the future education of Chaitra who has set her eyes on becoming a KAS officer.

When Shridhar Panaghanti heard that his son Sai Samarth had topped the Commerce stream with 595 marks, he shed tears of joy.

Sai Samarth, a student of Sathyasai Lokaseva PU College, Alike in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district, scored 100 in Mathematics and Sanskrit, 98 in Business Studies and English, and 99 in Accountancy.

“If only I had not been negligent, I could have scored 100 in Accountancy, too,” he said. Sai Samarth had been confident about doing well and he wants to become a chartered accountant. But for now, he wants to celebrate the results of his work. “I am going to give my friends a treat,” he said.

Shrinidhi P S from RNS Composite PU College, Vijayanagar, Bengaluru, who shared a first rank in Commerce with Sai Samarth, is keen on becoming an economist, rather than a chartered accountant. “Economics is closely related to our day-to-day life and I think studying this subject will make me knowledgeable,” Shrinidhi said.

She wants to be a part of the first batch of the Bangalore University’s Dr B R Ambedkar School of Economics, which is to open in the 2017-18 academic year. She scored 100 in Business Studies, Statistics and Sanskrit, 99 in Economics and Accountancy and 97 in English.
