Bengaluru teen treks to Mt Everest Base Camp

At an age when most teenagers spend their time posting pictures on social media or catching up on the latest movie, Pranav Vivek enjoys climbing peaks as a hobby.

Fourteen-year-old Vivek recently trekked to the Everest Base Camp (EBC) in Nepal, a feat which can leave youngsters his age gasping for breath.

Vivek climbed the 17,598-foot-high mountain along with his mother who is an avid mountaineer. He undertook the expedition through a mountaineering group called ‘Summiters.’

He was also the youngest of the six members who undertook the expedition. Pranav and his mother were the only participants from Bengaluru. The EBC trek covered a total of 110 km over 12 days across various landscapes ranging from dense forests to snow-covered mountains.

However, Vivek is not new to mountaineering as he has already scaled several peaks such as Mullayanagiri (the highest peak in Karnataka) and Bijli Mahadev (10,000 feet) along with his mother.

“I owe my achievement to my mother. It was she who trained me in my endeavour. As preparation for the EBC trek, I would climb up and down the stairs a thousand times. My mother also created a customised diet for me that included a lot of fruits,” said Vivek. “We encountered a lot of difficulties throughout the journey. The weather was changing constantly and we had to bear the brunt of snow and dust storms on the way. The daily trek would start early in the morning and continue until late night,” added Vivek.

“I felt breathless when I was nearing the EBC owing to its altitude. To overcome that, I would stop to take frequent 10-minute breaks to rest and then continue trekking. This helped me stay energised,” said Vivek.

“His passion for trekking started at the age of four when he joined me on a trek to Edakkal caves in Kerala and there was no looking back ever since. We want to encourage his passion and being a mountaineer myself, I will do my best to help him achieve his goals. He aspires to scale the seven summits across the continents,” said Kamala Narayanan, his mother.
