Women can now use washrooms in any hotel and restaurant in the city without feeling obliged to pay or buy anything. The Bruhat Bengaluru Hotels’ Association has decided to allow women to use the facility for free from Wednesday.

The decision was inspired by the Delhi model, that allows women and children to use washrooms at hotels for free. Welcoming the decision, Sarfaraz Khan, Joint Commissioner of Health and Solid Waste Management, BBMP, said the move was a much-needed one, since women suffered a lot as they did not have an access to clean washrooms. “We will make sure that all hotels and restaurants in the city allow women and children to use the facility for free.”

The decision was welcomed by the Bengalureans. “This is a blessing in disguise as I always feel awkward to use washrooms in the hotels for free and end up buying something as I feel obliged to do so.  This will really help us as we spend a lot of time on the road while driving to work in the traffic,” said Shweta Muralidhar, a teacher.

Deepika Arun, a software professional, said the move would benefit women like her, who avoid public toilets, fearing infection. “I also spend a lot of time travelling to and back from work. This will help us a lot as washrooms at hotels are much safer than the public toilets.”
