JOIN USPublic representatives and members of various citizens groups on Friday took an oath to protect water bodies in Bengaluru.
Launching their campaign, Rajya Sabha member Rajeev Chandrasekhar, BJP MP P C Mohan and BJP MLA Aravind Limbavali along with a few corporators visited Bellandur, Varthur and Rampura lakes. During the inspection, citizens and politicians discussed the government’s inaction in protecting lakes and deliberated over the need for civic agencies and citizens to collectively take the onus of restoring the lake ecosystem.
Chandrasekhar said, “What we see today is clear evidence that there has been corruption in the state. Corruption is a culture that is now all-pervasive in the current government.”
N S Mukunda, founding president of Citizens’ Action Forum hailed the initiative of building a strong group of people from every section of society to preserve the lake ecosystem.
Naresh Narasimhan of a citizens’ group Naagarika blamed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) for failing to stop sewage from entering lakes despite spending crores of rupees. He opined that the BWSSB must be restructured and brought under BBMP’s ambit with one common commissioner to ensure accountability and transparency. All those who were part of the delegation were unanimous that a fresh survey should be conducted using historical data and modern GIS technology to fix the boundary of the lake.
