Two from TN held, 2 kg gold seized

Two jewellery businessmen from Tiruchirappalli in Tamil Nadu were arrested by the railway police here on Tuesday for smuggling gold by train.

The police recovered over two kg gold ornaments worth Rs 24 lakh from the arrested S Venkatesh (50) and M Pandiyan (30).

“The police acted on definite leads and were waiting at the Cantonment railway station. The suspects got down at 5.30 am from a train and were carrying ornaments in two bags,” Prasad, Police Inspector, Cantonment Railway police station, told DH.

The police detained them for questioning and checked their baggage. The suspects did not have necessary documents. They wanted to sell the gold by avoiding taxes to earn more money in the wake of Akshaya Tritiya festival.
