An auto-rickshaw driver was killed and a woman passenger injured in a pile-up on the BHEL underpass near Sadashivanagar, north Bengaluru, around 8 am on Sunday.

The accident was triggered by an unidentified vehicle whose driver lost control of it as it moved into the underpass. The vehicle rear-ended the auto-rickshaw, causing it to accelerate. The auto-rickshaw driver, Rafique (35), failed to control his vehicle and it hit a cab before overturning.

The cab driver got off and pulled Rafique and the woman out of the auto-rickshaw. Rafique had sustained grievous head injuries. The cab driver arranged a vehicle and sent him to the MS Ramaiah Memorial Hospital. But it was too late and Rafique died on the way, said the inspector of the Sadashivanagar traffic police station.

The woman hailed another vehicle and scooted off while the cab driver was busy taking Rafique to hospital. Police are yet to ascertain her identity.

Rafique hailed from Channarayapatna, Hassan district, and had moved to Bengaluru about 10 years ago. He was living in Kanteerava Nagar, Nandini Layout. Police are reviewing the CCTV footage to trace the unidentified vehicle whose driver triggered the accident.
