1.15 lakh litres of Nandini milk sold daily in Mumbai

Nandini milk marketed by the Karnataka Milk Federation has become popular in Mumbai and 1.15 lakh litres of milk is being sold there every day.

In the four months of distributing Nandini milk in that city, the demand has already crossed one lakh litres and KMF is expecting the demand to increase further. It intends to reach a target of 10 lakh litres within one and a half years.

P Nagaraju, chairman of KMF, said milk from the Tumkur Milk Union is transported to Mumbai in tankers and it takes 18 hours for the milk to reach there. Once there, the milk is frozen, processed and packed at a private unit, he said. Nagaraj said earlier, officials used to sell the extra milk to private parties at lower prices and the latter would convert it to powder and sell it.

“They used to sell it for Rs 22 to Rs 23 per litre and they would get a commission, too. After I took over, I put an end to this and began selling the milk in Mumbai,” Nagaraju said.

He said Mumbai has a daily requirement of 70 lakh to 80 lakh litres of milk. People there are appreciating the quality of Nandini milk and they are demanding more supply. “If we keep increasing the supply according to the demand, we will be supplying 10 lakh litres in an year and a half.”
