Bengaluru's JNCASR fourth best university in India: MHRD rankings

Last Updated 04 April 2017, 20:56 IST

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research (JNCASR) which did not even figure in the top 10 best universities in the country last year has made it to the fourth position in this year’s India Rankings released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

This is among the only government institute that figures in the top 10 ranks to have gone up the ladder ranking ladder. In the engineering category, even as National Institute of Technology, Mysuru figures in the 2016 list of top 10 engineering colleges, none from Karnataka have made it to the top this time.

In the list of pharmacy colleges, Manipal College of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Manipal has dropped from position one in 2016 to seven in 2017 while Al Ameen College of Pharmacy, Bengaluru (ranked 13 in 2016) and NGSM Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Mangaluru (ranked 18 in 2016) do not figure in the list of top institutes.

For a more robust system of rankings, the ministry tweaked the existing valuation system to include Research Impact.

Parameters for quality of publications have been enhanced to include the number of highly cited papers in addition to the usual parameters of publications per faculty and citations per paper.

In addition to these, innovations have also been made in improving the scoring metrics, where the percentile metric has been replaced by a more discriminating metric. All research related information, including publications, citations, highly cited papers and even patent information about institutes was collected from third party databases (from industry partners) to obtain an ‘objective and unbiased’ picture.

For this year’s perception inputs, a large data base of academic and industry peers and employers was deployed, in addition to getting inputs from members of general public. Provisions were also made for the scale of operations of an institute in terms of the size of its student population and graduated doctoral students.
