JOIN USThe priests of Sufi shrine Khwaja Moinuddin Chisti in Ajmer have denounced the Jaipur court verdict in the 2007 dargah bomb blast case.
The National Investigation Agency special court in Jaipur on Wednesday sentenced two right-wing activists to life imprisonment for the Ajmer dargah blast, which killed three people and injured 17.
In disagreement with the court decision, Sarwar Chisty, khadim and gaddinashin of the Ajmer dargah, who had filed the FIR in the case, sought to appeal in the high court, seeking death penalty for the duo. “Even after the court took 10 years to deliver the judgement, it has only sentenced them to life imprisonment. We were expecting death penalty for them. Around 17 were injured and three died in the incident,” Chisty told DH.
Chisty also said that it is the first such incident in which RSS members have been convicted in a terror attack and, hence, it is condemnable. The 2007 bomb blast still impacts the holy city of Ajmer. Security has been beefed up and strict measures are in place. One of the khadims told DH: “Before the 2007 bomb blast, hundreds of devotees would sleep inside the shrine as it was kept open the whole night. After the blast, the dargah gates are shut at 10 pm and no one is allowed to stay inside.”
As a part of the security measures, metal detectors, X-ray machines and CCTV cameras have been installed at the dargah premises. The Rajasthan Police has also deputed additional battalions, including women constables, for ensuring security at the dargah.
The court had held Hindu right-wing activists Sunil Joshi and Devendra Gupta guilty of planning the blast, and Bhavesh Bhai Patel of planting the explosive.
