Land acquisition blues for 2nd underpass near Kadirenahalli Cross

Last Updated 20 March 2017, 20:53 IST

Land acquisition problems are set to obstruct the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike’s (BBMP) plan to build another grade separator next to the Kadirenahalli underpass towards Dayananda Sagar Institutions.

The BBMP is building a signal-free corridor on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) to link Yeshwantpur with Silk Board junction via Jedi Mara junction on Bannerghatta Road. A major stumbling block to the project is the intersection near Kadirenahalli Cross. Four years ago, the BBMP built an underpass at Kadirenahalli Cross but forgot to decongest another intersection just 150 metres away. As a result, the bottleneck continues there.

It has now planned to build a grade separator (flyover or underpass) at the intersection of the ORR with the road that leads to Dayananda Sagar Institutions, said BBMP chief engineer (major project) B S Prahallad.

“We want to build a grade separator but land acquisition problems have hampered our plans. Now that a new Transfer of Development Rights (TDR) policy is on the anvil, we hope to acquire land by issuing the TDR and complete the project,” he added.

Padmanabhanagar MLA R Ashoka insisted that another grade separator, preferably an underpass, was “badly needed”. “The Kadirenahalli underpass could have been extended till the second intersection, which is hardly a few metres away. Due to the delay by the contractor in building the Kadirenahalli underpass, the second underpass could not be taken up. It has to be done now. I have already asked officials to send a proposal to the BBMP afresh,” Ashoka said.

Given the land acquisition problems, BBMP engineers planned a C-shaped bridge above the ORR towards Dayananda Sagar Institutions only to trash the idea later. A BBMP engineer said building another underpass would mean demolishing the retaining wall of the Kadirenahalli underpass to extend it to the next intersection.
