Frothing Varthur lake causes traffic snarls

Last Updated 17 March 2017, 18:51 IST

Heavy froth in Varthur lake on Friday morning spread all over the road near Virginia Mall causing traffic snarls on Whitefield Road connecting HAL Airport.

People drove cautiously fearing skin and respiratory diseases from the highly contaminated Varthur lake which could even be carcinogenic.

The foam remained on the road for almost two hours. As a result, there was chock-a-block traffic for quite some time.

The frothing came as a surprise to many, including the chief executive officer of Karnataka Lake Conservation and Development Authority G Vidyasagar.

There was no reason for the frothing on Thursday and Friday, he said. Frothing is observed only when there is heavy rain but there was no rain on Wednesday or Thursday.

“I am surprised there was frothing in the morning. I will get it investigated,” said Vidyasagar. He added that there was some frothing in Bellandur lake as well.

Elan Kulandaivelu of Whitefield Rising said usually in March and April, there is frothing but not to the extent observed on Friday. He suspected the role of some garment industries upstream, which could have done some chemical washing, causing frothing.
