Hassan residents to get water once in two days

The residents of Hassan city will get water once in two days for the next four months, Deputy Commissioner V Chaitra has said.

Speaking at a meeting of the District Development Coordination and Monitoring Committee here on Tuesday, the deputy commissioner said that it had been decide to release 20 cusec of water from Yagachi dam in Belur to Hassan city for tackling water scarcity.

“At a high-level meeting chaired by Regional Commissioner M V Jayanthi, it was decided to release water from the dam to Haluvagilu pick up from where it would be supplied to Hassan,” the DC said.

City Municipal Council president H S Anil Kumar explained the problems faced by the people after water was released from Hemavathi dam. “Water has to be drawn from distance of more than 1.5 km. It is not possible to draw water even with two motors. The CMC should release Rs 1 crore as 10 motors are required for the purpose,” he said.

Anil complained that the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board had stopped supplying water from the borewells located on its premises. “While the CMC charges Rs 120 water cess, they demand Rs 450. The KIADB should be directed to continue supply of water,”  he stressed.

Former prime minister H D Deve Gowda directed the officials of KIADB to supply water and promised to speak to Industries Minister R V Deshpande in this regard.

MLA K M Shivalingegowda said that Arsikere taluk was facing fund shortage to tackle water and fodder crisis. He said that as many as 530 villages in the taluk were reeling under water crisis. He appealed to consider the issue on a priority basis. Soon MLAs H D Revanna, H S Prakash, H K Kumaraswamy and C N Balakrishna joined the issue.

Deputy Commissioner Chaitra said that Rs 39 crore is required to tackle water problems in villages. She added that a Rs 6.58-cr proposal had been submitted to the Revenue department to tackle the water problem in the town. Deve Gowda said that another meeting should be held on March 10 to review the situation. Zilla Panchayat president Shwetha Devaraj was present in the meeting.
