Zlatan dazzles in United triumph

Last Updated 26 February 2017, 19:02 IST

Zlatan Ibrahimovic sealed the first major silverware of Jose Mourinho's Manchester United reign and broke Southampton's hearts as the Swedish star's late goal clinched a dramatic 3-2 victory in Sunday's League Cup final.

Ibrahimovic was one of Mourinho's marquee signings in the close-season and he repaid his manager's faith with a typically dominant display on the big occasion at Wembley.

The 35-year-old opened the scoring with a blistering free-kick before Jesse Lingard doubled United's lead. Manolo Gabbiadini sparked a thrilling Southampton fightback, scoring just before half-time and again early in the second half.

But Ibrahimovic had the last word as his 87th minute header ensured Mourinho joined United legend Alex Ferguson and Nottingham Forest great Brian Clough as the only managers to win the League Cup four times.

Kane shines

In the Premer League, striker Harry Kane scored a clinical first-half hat-trick in 23 minutes as Tottenham Hotspur rebounded from their midweek European disappointment to overwhelm Stoke City 4-0 on Sunday.

Tottenham's victory put them above Manchester City into second place, 10 points behind leaders Chelsea.

Kane put the home team ahead in the 14th minute with his 100th goal in club football, with 84 of them coming for Spurs.

He added another 18 minutes later, volleying in from a corner and completed his third treble in six weeks with a deflected shot. Dele Alli made it 4-0 before halftime from Kane's cross.

West Ham hold Watford

On Saturday, Troy Deeney continued his recent prolific goalscoring form but his early penalty was not enough for Watford to beat a resilient West Ham as substitute Andre Ayew earned the visitors a point in a hard-fought 1-1 draw.
