JOIN USDemanding a fresh trust vote in the Tamil Nadu Assembly, the DMK on Wednesday staged a statewide hunger strike even as the AIADMK accused the Opposition party of trying to destabilise its democratically elected government.
DMK working president and leader of opposition M K Stalin, who led the strike from Trichy district, said the trust motion adopted without the opposition’s presence was against Assembly rules.
Stalin said he would leave for New Delhi on Wednesday night to meet President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday and explain to him the events in the House on February 18.
All DMK members were evicted from the Assembly by Speaker P Dhanapal after violence broke out in the House as Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami, a loyalist of jailed AIADMK general secretary V K Sasikala, sought a confidence vote. No Opposition MLA was present when Palaniswami won the vote against party rebel O Panneerselvam.
DMK MPs and former Union ministers, including T R Baalu, also participated in Wednesday’s hunger strike held in various districts. The DMK’s allies the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League also extended their support.
