A 45-year-old cloth merchant committed suicide after recording a video in which he said he was being harassed by a couple who had lent him money.

The incident took place in Maruthi Nagar in Kengeri on Tuesday. Ranoji Rao, a native of Gauribidanur, hanged himself from the ceiling fan when his mother Lakshmi Bai was asleep and his two children were away at school, police said. When Lakshmi Bai woke up and went to his room, she found him hanging. She called in her neighbours, who then informed the police.

In the morning, Rao visited a temple and recorded a video of himself. In it, he said he had borrowed about Rs 4 lakh from Vani and her husband Mahesh, both lawyers and residents of Vijayanagar. Rao said they had been harassing him for the money, and he had tried to sell his property to be able to do so. He hadn't found a buyer because of demonetisation.

He sought time, but the couple calculated excess interest and told him he owed them Rs 20 lakh. Rao had then fought with them and accused them of cheating, according to the video. The selfie also contains a request for police action against the couple.

“After recording the video, around 12.30 pm, he went home and committed suicide.

Based on the video, we have registered a case of abetment to suicide. The couple will be questioned,” said a senior police officer. Rao had shut down his cloth shop recently.
