Modi promised DDLJ, but delivered Gabbar: Rahul

Launching a scathing attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi on Friday accused him of not fulfilling the promises had made during the 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

“I have a list of the promises Modiji had made to mother Ganga. What happened to those promises? What have you (Modi) done for Varanasi? (the PM’s Lok Sabha constituency),” Rahul asked at an election meeting in Raebareli, his mother and Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s Parliamentary constituency.

Taking a swipe at Modi for his remark that he will never “betray”  Uttar Pradesh, which has “adopted” him, Rahul said one has to keep his words to maintain a relationship.

He said Modi sought to establish relations wherever he went.  “Rishtey bolne se nahin bante. Nibhane se bante hain,” (Relations are not made by mere words. They have to be maintained), the Congress leader said.

He said Modi had promised to clean the Ganga and Varanasi. But nothing has happened in the past three years.

“Modiji had promised DDLJ (Sharukh Khan’s movie Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge), but delivered Gabbar (the dacoit in Amitabh-Dharmendra blockbuster Sholay),” he said.

The reference to the film comes barely two days after Modi said at an election rally in Kannauj that the alliance between the Congress and Samajwadi Party reminded him of Bollywood movies.

Earlier, Rahul took out a roadshow in Raebareli with his sister and party star campaigner Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
