Four underage children brought from Uttar Pradesh to work in a wooden furniture factory in eastern Bengaluru have been rescued in a joint operation by police, the Department of Health and Family Welfare and Talaash, a nonprofit which brought their plight to light.

The children — the eldest being 17 years old, another aged 13 and two 10-year-old boys — were brought from Lakhimpur Kheri district by four men around eight months ago to work in the factory at K Narayanapura, Kothanur, alongside three adult employees.

The factory’s owner as well as the men who had brought the children to Bengaluru escaped when the raid was carried out. On Wednesday, the Kothanur police registered a case under IPC Section 370 (trafficking of persons) and the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015.
