JOIN USZilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Dr Ravi said plastic waste should not be thrown or burnt. Instead, it should be collected and handed over to the gram panchayat or authorities concerned to help maintain clean surroundings, he added.
At a cleanliness awareness programme organised by Jana Shikshana Trust, Apna Desh, Press Club, Chittara Balaga, Prajna Counselling Centre and panchayat offices at Falah school near KC Road here, he called upon the students to be like soldiers when it comes to cleanliness.
He told the should be ‘Swacchatha Sainiks’ and explained the dangers of plastic waste and the ways of disposing of it.
Dr Ravi also administered cleanliness oath to the students to maintain cleanliness in their houses.
Later, a group of volunteers took out a 5 km rally from KC Road to Natekal and created awareness among the members of the public, the residents as well as the passersby. “The stretch between Falah School near KC Road and Natekal was very clean a few years ago,” said Abdul Khader, a member of the panchayat. The 5 km stretch has turned into a dumpyard with plastic bags strewn all over the road along the stretch, he added.
Addressing the gathering en route Natekal, former ombudsman Sheena Shetty, who has been recently appointed as the ambassador for Swacch Bharath Mission in the district, laid stress on the need to maintain cleanliness so that the region turns out to be a model place from the existing dumpyard-like place. “If everyone thinks that its not their responsibility, then no one will do it,” he said.
He appealed people to take up the same as their own responsibility and join hands towards making the streatch a plastic-free as well as garbage-free stretch.
