Hacchinadu villagers opposed the illegal and unscientific extraction of sand from Cauvery river in Kannangala village and urged the revenue officer to impose ban on sand extraction.

The villagers had complained to revenue officer Srinivas and village accountant Anil about the illegal sand extraction which is being done by stagnating the flow of water. The officials visited the spot on Friday.

Through government auction process, a person from Kushalnagar has availed permission to extract sand on Cauvery river banks bearing the survey number 1/1 and 2/1 at Hacchinadu. But sand is extracted by placing cement sacks in the course of water and the accumulated sand is collected. This procedure has not only affected the natural flow of water but also has spoiled the road. The extractor has crashed the small rocks and stones which were helpful in getting the country rafts down to water.

Road has been constructed in an unscientific way to take the lorries to the middle of the river, said gram panchayat members Nitin and Tanuja, villagers M K Chinnappa, Bhavani, Kitta, Rukmini, Ayyappa, Manjunath and others. The residents of SC/ST colony dwelling in the vicinity have also been disturbed, the villagers said.
