Joyline goes the distance

General State Games: Triple jumper sets new State mark; Amarnath wins hurdles gold

It was double joy for Joyline Lobo, as she clinched the gold and re-wrote her own State record in the women’s triple jump on the second day of the athletics competitions at the State Games here on Thursday.

Representing Dakshina Kannada, Joyline produced an effort of 13.13 metres to bag the yellow metal at the RN Shetty stadium. Joyline obliterated her previous mark of 13.05 set at the Inter-state Championship in Lucknow in 2014.

The Karkala girl jumped 12.65 metres in her first attempt and after a foul in the second, she cleared 13.13 metres in her third go. After skipping the fourth try, Joyline committed fouls in her last two attempts.

Dakshina Kannada completed a clean sweep in the event, with Aishwarya R (12.48M) and Anusha G Poojary (12.40M) winning the silver and bronze.

“My rhythm was good and I knew I could produce a strong performance. The hot conditions here affected me a bit and that’s why I committed fouls,” Joyline, who is employed with the Life Insurance Corporation of India, said.

Joyline, a silver medallist in the Federation Cup in Mangaluru in 2015, said her current goal is to get selected to the national team. “I am focusing on doing well in the Federation Cup in Delhi in May, which is a selection meet for the upcoming major international events,” she said.

Costly blunder

In the 110 metres hurdles, a blunder at the finish line cost Sumanth MK the gold medal. The Tumkur athlete, after establishing a comfortable lead, celebrated a bit too early, allowing a charging Amarnath MD of Belagavi to nose ahead for the gold in 15.1 seconds. Sumanth, who finished 0.1 second behind Amarnath, had to be content with silver.

In the women’s 100M hurdles, Bengaluru’s Prajna Prakash powered to victory in 13.8 seconds.

The women’s 400 metres final saw the fancied Vijayakumari GK triumph in comfortable fashion. The SAI athlete was unchallenged throughout the race and cruised to win in 54.0 seconds.
