Green canopy on Jayamahal Road to go

Last Updated 07 February 2017, 21:38 IST

The green canopy that adorns Jayamahal Road may be a thing of past as BBMP is set to chop off 112 trees to widen the road soon.

The civic body will shortly invite objections from public to remove these trees that have embellished the area for decades. BBMP's assistant conservator of forest N Shanth Kumar said a detailed survey of trees to be felled is yet to be done. The officer defended the uprooting trees saying they are doing it as per the court order.

“We are felling these trees to ease traffic congestion. Besides, these trees are very old and weak,” Kumar said.

“There are more than 350 to 400 trees in the entire stretch. Only those trees which are obstructing the project will be felled,” he said.

Kumar said BBMP will compensate for the green cover loss by carrying out an elaborate afforestation programme on both sides of the road.

Social media went abuzz with this news drawing angry reactions from tree lovers. The green brigade was in no mood to subscribe to the explanation offered by the BBMP to cut the trees
