The government, on Tuesday, said the available water in the Cauvery river would be sufficient for Bengaluru city till May.

In a written reply to questions by K Gopalaiah (JD-S) in the Assembly, Bengaluru Development Minister K J George said he was making the statement based on the information given by the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam. He said the city’s requirement per day is 1,400 million litres per day (MLD), while at present 1,380 MLD is being supplied from KRS and other sources.

To a question by Gopalaiah on the measures taken to meet the drinking water requirement in summer, George said the government had written to the BBMP, forest department, rural drinking water and sanitation department to divert their water tankers to the BWSSB for four months to supply water.BWSSB has 7,932 borewells and of these, 6,994 are functional. In addition, there are 1,925 mini-tankers. All these would help meet the demand for water, he added.

Replying to questions by H C Balakrishna (JD-S) regarding the Thippagondanahalli reservoir, the minister said it had come to the notice of the government that water let into the reservoir was polluted. But the quality of water would improve if sufficient water flows into it during rainy season.

George said water in the reservoir basin would be diverted to sewage treatment plants (STPs) which are being built. At present, 20 MLD water is being treated at a sewage treatment plant in Nagasandra. The work on treating polluted water released into Arkavati river had been taken up. Ayala Water and Ecology Limited, Israel, had been awarded the work to treat water through natural biological system, for which the State Pollution Control Board would allocate Rs 9.9 crore, he added.
