Last Updated 07 February 2017, 19:13 IST

Bengaluru teams Vijaya Bank and Mounts Club emerged champions in the men’s and women’s sections respectively in the basketball competitons of the State Olympic Games on Tuesday.

In the men’s summit clash at the Mallasajjana College of Physical Education, Vijaya Bank staved off a late fightback from Madras Engineering Group (MEG) to clinch the crown 56-49.
Mounts Club defeated Alva’s Moodbidari 55-49 for the title in the women’s category.

Despite missing their regular skipper and India international Arvind Arumugam, Vijaya Bank pulled off a fighting victory with Anil Kumar (17 points), Naveen MS (15) and Karthik (14) being the star players.

Handling and passing the ball brilliantly, stand-in skipper and India international Rajesh Uppar also played a crucial role in Vijaya Bank’s victory.

After going to the break with a ten-point lead (31-21), it looked like Vijaya Bank would cruise to victory. But MEG, who wasted many opportunities in the first-half, came back brilliantly to keep the match in balance.

With an improved defence, MEG denied easy chances for their opponents. With two minutes remaining in the game, the match was wide open as MEG trailed Vijaya Bank 47-49. However, Karthik and Anil scored crucial points to help Vijaya Bank win the tie.

Hubballi-Dharwad out
Hosts Hubballi-Dharwad men were knocked out in hockey after they went down 2-4 via penalties in an ill-tempered semifinal clash against Rail Wheel Factory (RWF) here at the Karnataka University ground.

In a high-intensity first-half, where three yellow cards and two green cards were shown, Kusha slammed a brace (26th, 31st) for RWF. The hosts rallied to equalise after break through goals from Vinayak B (40th) and Manjunath Yadav (64th). With the score tied at 2-2, the match went into the shootout which RWF won.

All the players converted for RWF while Kushal and Anjaneya missed the targets for Hubballi-Dharwad. In the final, RWF will take on Kodagu, who beat SAI, Southern Centre 2-1 in the other semifinal.

In the women’s section, DYES Mysuru will lock horns with Bellary for the title.
