Bengaluru’s Ujwal C Naidu towered over his opponents to bag as many as five medals, including the individual champion honour in artistic gymnastics, on the fourth day of the State Games here on Monday.

At the Bala Maruthi Gymnasium, Ujwal won gold in vault and rings and finished second in floor exercise and pommel horse. The 17-year-old was adjudged the individual champion in the men’s category with 71.65 points.

The youngster’s fine execution in rings saw him score 12.7 points and edge out Iqbal Maradgi of Dharwad (12) for the top spot. Amrut Mudrabet (11.95), also from Dharwad, finished third.

Despite committing a minor error in landing in both his vaults, Ujwal annexed the gold with 12.375. Amrut scored 11.6 points to bag the silver while Abhiram (11.075) of Bengaluru came third.

Ujwal settled for the runners-up spot in pommel horse and floor exercise, after experiencing a fall in both the events.

Trained by his father at the Sri Nagaraj Gymnastics Academy in Vidyapeetha, Ujwal has been in named in the Indian team for the upcoming Junior Asian Championships. “I could have won gold in all four events but the poor infrastructure here didn’t allow me to give my best. We train with much better facilities and to adjust and perform in these conditions here is tough. Some slight mistakes in my performance also cost me,” he said.

In the women’s section, it was a two-way battle between Bengaluru’s Shreevarshini PS and Sandhya G in majority of the events. The duo, also trainees at Sri Nagaraj Gymnastics Academy, won five medals between them.

Shreevarshini bagged two bronze (floor exercise and uneven bar) and a gold (vault), emerging the individual champion with 26.825 points.

Sandhya, who has competed in the junior and senior national championships, powered to gold in the floor exercise and uneven bar. The 17-year-old logged 32.725 points to finish second to Shreevarshini in the individual champions’ race.

Dharwad (263.30) pipped Bengaluru to be the team champions in the men’s section. Amrut Mudrabet, with four medals on the day, led the charge for hosts. In the women’s section, Bengaluru won the team championship with (148.75) points.
