Last Updated 05 February 2017, 18:56 IST

Ever since she switched interest to archery from rowing, Monisha V Shankar’s progress has been encouraging.

After producing impressive shows in the Sub-junior and Junior national meets, Monisha came into the State Olympic Games as the favourite. The Bengaluru girl lived up to the expectations by winning two medals and emerged individual champion here on Sunday.

Monisha first bagged a silver in the in the women’s recurve qualification round on Saturday and then clinched the gold in the recurve elimination round on Sunday to cap off a fine tournament.

In the qualification, the 20-year-old let her nerves get the better of her and a dip in concentration level saw her finish second (463 points) to Lalithashree, also from Bengaluru, who scored 601 points. Keerthana L, with a total score of 401, finished third.

However, a much composed Monisha was on target in the elimination round and edged Lalithashree 6-4 for gold. “I was a little tensed during the qualification and that affected my performance. I was very calm in the elimination round and it worked for me,” she said.

Coached by Anil Kumar at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium, Monisha began her sporting career as a rower in 2007 and went on to compete in the Sub-junior nationals in the sport. But an archery summer camp in 2010 saw her change allegiance to the latter.

Making steady progress, Monisha has so far clinched two silver medals in the Sub-junior nationals (2013) and a bronze in the Junior nationals (2014). The youngster also represented the country in the Sub-junior international archery championship in Seoul in South Korea (2013).

In weightlifting, SDM Sports Club Ujire, with 219 points, were the overall champions in the men’s section. The women’s overall title was bagged by Jai Hanuman club with 163 points.

Vijaya Bank in semis

A dominant Vijaya Bank men’s side remained undefeated in all their three matches from Pool B to storm into the semifinals in basketball. They will take on Bharat Union, who defeated Beagles 47-37 in a must-win encounter on Sunday in their final Pool A match to enter the last four round.

In the other semifinal, Sports Hostel (Bengaluru) will take on MEG. In the women’s section, DYES Mysuru and Beagles have booked their semifinal spots.

Santosh shines in cycling

In Hubballi, it was a fitting end to the cycling competition with the men’s 60km road race turning out to be a thriller. In a race that witnessed 51 competitors, Gadag’s Santosh Vibhutihalli edged the experienced Malappa Mutennavar by a margin of a micro second.

Santosh clocked 1:29:07.98 to take the top spot on podium. Malappa, who has represented the country twice in the Asian Cycling Championship, crossed the finish line in a time of 1:29:07.99, to miss the gold by a whisker. Belagavi’s Prashanth E (1:29:8.00) took the bronze.
