High drama prevailed at the Visakhapatnam Airport on Thursday as Opposition leader, YSR Congress chief Y S Jaganmohan Reddy was not allowed by the police to leave the airport to participate in a Marina beach-type mass protest at the R K Beach in that city.

The protest demanding special category status for the state was called by unknown persons on social media, which was  supported by Yuva Sena chief Pawan Kalyan, YSRC, Left parties and a few social organisations.

Jaganmohan Reddy and six other senior YSR Congress leaders, who arrived at the airport by a SpiceJet flight from Hyderabad around 3.15 pm, sat on the tarmac demanding special status, when the police told them that they will not be allowed to enter the city. Jagan, who refused to return to Hyderabad, finally agreed to move away from the tarmac to allow a Hyderabad-bound flight to board and take off.

Later, Jagan was seen shouting at the airport police for not allowing him to enter the domestic terminal through the arrival gate. “Open the door. Why are we not allowed to enter the terminal,”Jagan was seen questioning the police on TV footage. Outside the airport, several YSRC women leaders under MLA (Paderu) Giddi Eswari, created ruckus for not being allowed to meet their leader inside the airport.
