Floral cycle ride in Krumbiegel's memory

Last Updated 19 January 2017, 19:38 IST

A heritage cycling event will be held on January 22 at which people will cycle around Lalbagh with floral baskets fixed to their bicycles, just like people did during the Colonial era.

The first ‘Floral Cycle Ride’ is being organised by Project Vruksha Foundation (PVF) on Sunday to relive the lives of the Mysuru royals and the Colonial era. The main aim of the event is to go green, to reinvent and remember the legacy of the kings of Mysuru.

The bicycle ride will also pay tribute to Gustav Hermann Krumbiegel, the German botanist who designed Lalbagh. The event will commemorate the 100-year-old Floral Bicycle Parade introduced by Krumbiegel.

The campaign is being held to preserve the floral assets and green canopies of Bengaluru and to spread awareness on protecting the diminishing lung spaces in the concrete jungle, said Vijay Nishanth, founder of PVF.

Alyia Phelps-Gardiner Krumbiegel, great granddaughter of Krumbiegel and Vishalakshi Devi Avaru, from the erstwhile Wadiyar family, will participate in the event, said Nishanth.
The foundation has been planning the event for the past two years and its aim is to make it an annual event, starting this year. The ride will start from the Double Road (Kengal Hanumanthaiah Road) gate of Lalbagh and will go around the botanical garden via Krumbiegel Road and back.
