JOIN USSam and Kerry are among the 22 highly trained canines actively sniffing out drugs in Punjab, a state infamous for high incidents of narcotic smuggling and drug abuse.
Nineteen Labradors have been hired from a private agency to crackdown on drug flow during elections, and their deployment is proving useful.
As much as 58 kg of poppy husk has already been sniffed out by Sam and Kerry, the two Labradors on duty, from different locations in Barnala and Bathinda.
On specific inputs, raids were conducted by the police on a house in Barnala where drugs were suspected to have been hidden. Just when the raid appeared futile, Kerry managed to sniff out 4 kg poppy husk stacked under a debris of bricks in the courtyard.
In another incident, while the police teams were engaged in routine checking of vehicles on the highway in Bathinda, Sam started to bark while looking at the rear of a car. An extensive search resulted in the recovery of 54 kg of poppy husk.
Three dogs of the Punjab Police are also part of the dog squad. The decision to hire trained canines was based on the directions of the Election Commission.
