Upper Bhadra project stage-II faces hurdle

Last Updated 18 January 2017, 19:17 IST

The state government’s proposal to extend Upper Bhadra project to Davangere and Tumakuru districts is facing green hurdle as a central panel has sought more details.

Recently, the Expert Appraisal Committee under the Union Environment Ministry examined the state’s proposal and deferred its decision on granting environment clearance (EC) for want of more information. Originally, the project was designed to lift water from Tunga river to Bhadra reservoirs in two stages to irrigate lands of Chikkamagaluru and Chitradurga districts.

The stage-I of the project is under way. However in the stage-II, the state has proposed expansion to extend irrigation facilities to farmers in Davangere and Tumakuru districts as well.
