Bahuroopi: Photo expo of theatre personalities enthrals visitors

The ongoing photo exposition of theatre personalities at Suchitra Art Gallery in Kalamandir has been garnering a lot of interest from visitors. The expo is part of the week-long international multilingual theatre festival ‘Bahuroopi’ and has over 200 photographs of theatre personalities.The festival is on till January 18.

Photo exposition is the initiative of Ranga Rathnakara founder H S Govindegowda to pay a tribute to the artistes, playwrights and directors who have made immense contribution to the theatre.

Photographs of actor Rajkumar, Gubbi Veeranna, Chindodi Leela, Narasimharaju, G V Iyer, T P Kailasam, K M Ratnakar, M L Srikanteshagowda, B Jayashree and Minister Umashree are on display.

Govindegowda told DH that he collected the photographs of theatre personalities who had dedicated their lives to theatre.

Govindegowda, who is also a theatre personality, started collecting photographs from the year 2000 when he was serving in the department of Commercial Taxes as an assistant commissioner. He travelled across the state to collect photographs of well-known theatre personalities. While Govindegowda clicked photos of a few personalities, he also collected photos from family members of artistes. To promote theatre, Govindegowda also released CDs on mythological plays and published three books on ‘Rangageethe’.

Book, handicraft expo
As many as 60 stalls have been set up in the book and handicraft expo and a large number of people have been visiting the premises. However, the traders who have set up stalls there are complaining of poor business.

Chetana, a native of Jharkhand who has been participating in Bahuroopi for the past seven years by selling Tussar sarees and fabric, said that as compared to the previous years, this year the response has been poor. She, however, hoped that business would pick up in the last three days.

The stall has a variety of sarees, veils, hand block printed fabric ranging between Rs 4,000 and Rs 15,000. Asha Ramesh, a homemaker said, despite the prices being a little high, the quality of goods and the varied collections were worth purchasing.

Another shopkeeper S R Choudhary of Vivekananda Janaseva Vidya Kendra, who sells oxidised silver jewellery, also said that sales were not as good as expected. Choudhary has been participating in the expo for the past five years. Banjara craft items, ranging between Rs 400 and Rs 800, are also available in the stall.

A book vendor said as entry to the expo has been restricted to one gate, the footfalls have been less.

He said books of well-known authors such as Kuvempu and S L Bhyrappa however, have been in great demand.
